creative industry’s Professionalism

What is Professionalism
Professionalism comes in two forms. It pure definition and it’s common understanding.
Professionalism means an individual that is proficient or well versed in their field, aka a professional. While it commonly stands for the way one conducts themselves in the field of work and in the workplace.
This all means that Professionalism is the broad term for anyone that excels at their job in all aspects, to the work itself and how they conduct themselves. If one could master all these aspects of being a professional, then they would be seen as the perfect worker.
Professionalism in the industry
Professionalism though broad in nature to being perfect at ones job. the focus of which depends inadvertently on what the job is.
Some professions for example politicians, will have a heavy focus on ‘Communication’ and ‘Appropriateness’. Seeing as they need to be a public symbol for the goal they wish to pursue for the country’s development.
While working as a construction worker will have a heavy focus on ‘Competence’ and ‘Accountability’. Seeing as what they work on not only has to last but be safe for general public to use.
With that covered, I will now list the commonly known basics of professionalism in a workplace
- Competance
The first thing any employer will consider before others is your ability to do the work successfully and efficiently. There is no point in hiring someone if they do not have the skills to do the job.
This should not be seen as a dismissal of anyone that doesn’t know how to do the work before trying, but a general overview on if the individual is capable of learning and performing the job. - Integrity
Being truthful and accountable for your actions. No employer wants someone who will slack, sabotage or steal from the workplace, you are to be an asset not a detriment to the workplace. And having the confidence to ask for help when you don’t know something and want to learn and are Forword when a mistake is made is an admirable quality and is essential for personal growth. - communication
This is one a lot of younger people hope to avoid, but then even for the few jobs where in person communication is not needed, being able to speak to others informatively and constructively is a very sought after skill.
The ability to speak to a group of people or a crowd can be seen as a high level skill under the umbrella of communication. But what is asked of this skill in most cases, is the ability to put your ideas Forword, to ask for help and inform your colleagues of developments. - Appropriate wear
One that is commonly underrated but is again a skill when finding employment and being employed is appropriate wear.
A person in a suit gives the impression of importance and confidence and is generally seen as more desirable than someone that appears in a hoodie and tracky bottoms.
But it goes further than that, for some places in the game industry, wearing casual clothes are fine and to an outside perspective the work place can be seen as a comfortable and fun place to work. But even places such as these need to adhere to ethics on what’s appropriate.
Working on a construction site also has a difference in Appropriate wear, for the emphasis isn’t on how smart you look while working but how safe are the clothes you wear, hard hat, vest, gloves etc. Everything you wear must be maintained so that the wearer is protected but also doesn’t cause harm to themself, for example loose clothes that can get caught on equipment or clothes that can restrict movement.

Pillars of Game Development
When you read about the ‘4 pilers’ to being a professional in any field you’ll find that they all differ from each other. And thus, there is no clear answer for what are truly the Pillers of a given industry.
That being said, when it comes to game development, I’m in strong belief that the four sections written below, are the four pilers towards making a successful game
- The Challanege
The level of difficulty and effort needed to complete a game or level. Many people in life find it rewarding to do challenging work or activities and the game industry is no acceptation.
To complete a game that is a challenge, where it does not want you to win, where the player must put in effort to prepare and learn how to overcome an obstacle, that is the core of implementing something challenging in a game. - The Story
A compelling story is not always needed in a game, but if done right can really drive a player to go further, to learn more and see what happens next.
Following a compelling character, where you are introduced to the setting, usually through an intro or cinematic. that makes you sympathies with the character, feel a connection or make you rout for them in hopes the ending is how you would hope. Brings the quality that one might get from a book and gives it life in the form of visuals in a game. - The Experiance
Where we talked about the story that can be compelling to a player where you are told what is happening. The ‘Experience’ a player gets from playing a game can be as the saying goes. “A picture is worth a thousand words”.
Games that do not introduce you to the game, where you are thrown into a world where mystery is key. It can be lavish with color, or gray and derelict.
The world the player is in can go leaps and bounds to making it engaging. Making the player ‘feel’ an emotion directed by the games design. If you were to play in a old abandoned mansion where you must avoid horrors, you feel the tension of what might happen, the fear of being caught, and the excitement of making it to safety.
While if playing in open green fields where you must crow plants. You would feel laid back in the task, the satisfaction of getting one step closer, and the fulfillment of achieving your goal. - The Enjoyment
The fun factor of a game sounds like a for gone conclusion, but it is no less important in development. If you make a game to be fun in your eyes, it doesn’t mean it will be enjoyable for another person.
Hence why a lot of thought must be put into the game you develop, if you make a pvp game, it may not cater to those who want to socialize.
If you make a game where your left to your own devices and explore, it may not cater to those that like a set goal to follow.
